While Kazukiyo Gowa plots a right-wing coup with the sinister Nishida and his allies, Yushiro Gowa and Miharu continu their flight to Kyoto, following the “path of the kai.” At a ruined shrine, they share a vision of a revolt against the Emperor in Heian Japan (794-1185). They both participate in the struggle, piloting Kugai, huge mobile suits with faces based on Noh masks, although it’s not clear whether they’re the same Yushiro and Miharu or earlier incarnations. One of the key players in the Heian conflict is an androgynous figure in a wimplelike robe who influnces the decisions of the Empress and can actually summon Gasaraki; the viewer can learn his name (Einyo) by studying the “episode production sheets” included in the extra features, but not who he is. Back in the present, when 14-year-old Misuzu Gowa asks what’s become of her brother Yushiro, Noh master Sorachi tells her, “He died eight years ago–and was replaced.” Oddly, she inquires, “Why?” rather than the more pertinent, “How?” or “With what?” The mecha battles and multiple graphic styles will delight fans of the series, but the endless plot twists will confirm its detractors’ complaints. These wonderful resourceful websites offer information such as The Great Migration of immigrants to New England in the early 1600s, and the full text of New England Historical and Genealogical Register which offers thousands of genealogies from the 1847 forward. Some offer archives from every state. One of these sites has a goal to transcribe all United States census records from 1790 to 1930 and upload these with photo images to the web.

One other site has a goal of uploading gravestone inscriptions across the country to the internet. How marvelous that would be. One public archives offers naturalization and probate records including orphans-court cases, slave records and Civil War records One Florida site offers a database of 14,000 pension applications given to veterans and widows beginning in 1885. Are you drooling yet? Some sites offer a hard copy for a small fee so that you may file this document at home in your personal family history search file.

A Georgia University is taking Confederate pension records and digitizing them and uploading those images on their site. They’ve arranged these images by their county and you can search this information by entering the name of the widow or veteran. You can even download these documents to print them on your computer. Illinois offers a database containing names of veterans of Illinois in the following wars: War of 1812, Winnebago War, Black Hawk War, Mexican War, Civil War and the Spanish-American War. That should give you plenty to begin digging to find your free family history.

Hector Babenco, who went on to direct the acclaimed Kiss of the Spiderwoman, made an international splash with this gritty portrait of juvenile poverty and street crime in Brazil. Pixote (Portuguse slang for “Peewee”) is the name of a chubby-cheeked 10-year-old runaway played by real-life slum kid Fernando Ramos da Silva. He’s a natural, creating a childlike and vulnerable character left emotionally hardened and morally adrift by his brutal experiences. In an overcrowded São Paulo “reform school,” a cross between a prison and an army barracks, he learns the hard facts of survival as he watches gangs prey on weaker kids, and the cops and guards abuse, beat, and even murder their charges. Pixote escapes and turns to street crime in Rio with a small gang, but his dreams of big money and a good life are dashed as they play at crime in a violent kill-or-be-killed world. Equal parts expose and social drama, Pixote dramatizes the plight of millions of children who live on the streets or get ground up in the system that breeds hardened criminals from juvenile delinqunts. Like Luis Bunul’s Los Olvidados, one of Babenco’s inspirations, this occasionally melodramatic portrait of poverty is shocking and affecting, but no more so than da Silva’s own life story. After completing the film he sank back into poverty and crime, and died on the streets. His life became the subject of the 1996 film Who Killed Pixote?, which showed that despite the outcry created by Pixote, Brazil has done little to alleviate these conditions. –Sean Axmaker
