I follow local and national news stories daily by scanning the internet, television and by reading different blogs. I am one of those people who like to be informed about what goes on locally and around the world.

I am always seeking out the most interesting stories. Some of the hottest topics are cannon-fodder for the water cooler while others are deemed more relevant for dinner table conversation.

Reviewing different news stories is like taking a trip to a local sandwich shop. You select the ingredients you want on your sandwich and ignore the rest. I do the same with the news; I read the most interesting stories and ignore the irrelevant ones.

While reviewing different new stories, I always wonder what separates a newsworthy story from a non-newsworthy one. President Obama becoming the first African American president was definitely newsworthy while Jessica Simpson’s recent weight gain isn’t.

If the average person gains a few pounds, it won’t make the evening news…but an overweight celebrity is always a headline grabber.

So what is the best ingredient in a newsworthy story? Is it something that requires shock value? I am not even sure if there is anything in the news that still has shock value.

There was a recent news story about a group of people who created a sport which involved pit bulls and pigs. Like any other popular sport, there were spectators and a concession stand. You could enjoy a beer and a sandwich while watching some helpless pig get maimed by a pit bull.

I was surprised…not shocked.

Former NFL player, Michael Vick, brought animal cruelty into our homes with endless press coverage of his engaging in tormenting and killing dogs for sport.

What’s most shocking is how people can easily stand by and watch an innocent animal suffer or be killed without blinking.

Before the popularity of twenty-four hour news channels and the internet, I can remember being appalled by: cruelty to animals, teachers having sex with students, and corporate executives looting their companies while screwing over their employees. If you grew up in the 70s or 80s, these were considered shocking events.

Today’s average citizen has become desensitized to acts of cruelty and violence that once shocked many of us to the core of our humanity.

We are no longer surprised about headlines describing acts of inhumanity, cruelty and evil. We accept these practices as typical and continue on with our lives. I have known people who have opted not to have children because they do not want to raise a child in today’s society.

The thinking is logical; they have made a personal choice to keep an unborn child from someday becoming a potential news headline.

Roger and Me is a loose, smart-alecky documentary directed and narrated by Michael Moore, an everyman host with a devastating wit and a working-class pose. When his hometown is devastated by the plant closure of an American corporate giant (making record profits, one should note), the hell-raising political commentator with a prankster streak tries to turn his camera on General Motors Chairman Roger B. Smith, the elusive Roger of the title, and the film is loosely structured around Moore’s odyssey to track down the corporate giant for an interview.

While Moore ambushes his corporate subjects like a blu-collar Geraldo Rivera, a gurrilla interviewer who treasures his comic rebuffs as much as his interviews, his portraits of the colorful characters he meets along the way can be patronizing. The famous come off as absurdly out of touch (Anita Bryant appears for some can-do cheerleading, and hometown celebrity Bob Eubanks tells some boorish jokes), and the disenfranchised poor (notably an unemployed woman who sells rabbit meat to make ends meet) all too often appear as buffoons or hicks. But behind his loose play with the facts and snarky attitude is a devastating look at the victims of downsizing in the midst of the 1980s economic boom. This portrait of Reagan’s America and the tarnish on the American dream comes down to a simple qustion: what is corporate America’s responsibility to the country’s citizens? That’s a qustion no one at GM wants to answer. –Sean Axmaker

The dramatics are simple: the return of his son (Dylan Walsh) and grandson, offering a chance to reconcile; odd jobs for a construction company he’s trying to su for an injury; and a comedic grudge match against the owner (a reserved Bruce Willis). North Bath is the kind of place, wrapped in winter (beautifully shot by John Bailey), where enemies are friends, marriages are shaky, and Hawaii is only a state of mind. This “town drama” of a blu-collar America offers the patient filmgoer a rich and rewarding experience. Another small gem from writer-director Robert Benton (Places in the Heart). –Doug Thomas

See Lightning In a Bottle: A One Night History of the Blus Online Right Now!

Part concert, part history lesson, part summit meeting, and all blus, Lightning in a Bottle puts a bright spotlight on this quintessential American music. There are some heavy hitters at work here, both behind the camera (Martin Scorsese executive produced, while the film was directed by Antoine Fuqua of Training Day and King Arthur) and especially in front of it, with a superb house band and a mind-boggling array of musicians (including B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Solomon Burke, Keb’ Mo’, Macy Gray, the Neville Brothers, Robert Cray, and John Fogerty, to name but a few) performing at New York’s Radio City Music Hall in February, 2003. The idea was to trace the music from its beginnings; thus we get an African song (by Angeliqu Kidjo), some early gospel blus (the great Mavis Staples), acoustic Delta blus, and so on, right up to blus-drenched electric rock and even some rap (a riveting version of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Killing Floor” by Chuck D.). Virtually all of the immortals who defined the blus (Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and even Jimi Hendrix, whose fiery style is re-enacted by Buddy Guy) enter the picture, either through vintage film clips or new performances of their songs. One might wish for more insight into the influnce of the blus on jazz (Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit,” sung here by India.Arie, is a fine song, but it’s not a blus tune) or country, but overall, Lightning in a Bottle is an edifying and, most important, highly entertaining portrait of the music and its heritage. –Sam Graham

A crisply executed B gangster film from Hong Kong, circa 1990. Stylistically it’s a clone of the John Woo-Chow Yun-fat gangster films, but it also owes a lot to the popular Japanese comic book Crying Freeman, the story of a soulful hit man. Handsomely filmed on location in London, the film has a clear but enjoyably complex plot that implicates both the Japanese and the Chinese mobs in a plot to rub out an old guard crime boss, a traditionalist who opposes the lucrative drug trade. Sullen, sensual Simon Yam (Bullet in the Head), who looks half-dressed until he grows some photogenic chin stubble, is an orphan who was raised and trained to kill as the adopted son of the Old Boss. He plots revenge against his father’s enemies, and becomes enmeshed in a series of double-crosses. Joey Wong (the sexy spook from A Chinese Ghost Story) is a photographer who accidentally records one of Yam’s kills. The final battle sequnces have a much smaller body count than their Woo counterparts, but they do add some hand-to-hand kung fu, and a little old-school swordplay, to the martial mix. This is a minor movie, but a pleasing one, with a dark romantic score and a savory sense of gangland ritual and melodrama. –David Chute
